What is Snap-8?

An eight-amino-acid, N-acetylated peptide, developed as an elongated analogue of acetyl hexapeptide-8 (Argireline). Its sequence is modelled on the N-terminal region of SNAP-25, a synaptosomal-associated protein. In cosmetic-science and ingredient literature it is usually listed under the name acetyl octapeptide-3.

What kind of research material is this, and how is it handled?

It is a topical-cosmetic research material rather than an injectable. Published work around it is mostly formulation and in-vitro cosmetic-science research. As with other peptides, it is normally kept cool and protected from light. Supplied for laboratory research use only.

Research guide

Snap-8, explained

The short version: Snap-8 is acetyl octapeptide-3, a cosmetic peptide made by stretching Argireline by two amino acids. It was built for anti-wrinkle creams, and the headline results come from the company that sells it.

What it is

Snap-8 is a trade name owned by the ingredient maker Lipotec. The chemical is acetyl octapeptide-3: eight amino acids, an extension of the six-amino-acid Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-3). Both copy the front end of SNAP-25, a protein nerve endings need to release the chemical signal that makes a muscle contract. By competing with SNAP-25, the peptide is meant to soften the small, repeated facial muscle movements behind expression lines.

What has been studied

The parent peptide, Argireline, was first described in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2002. Lipotec's product data for Snap-8 says it is roughly 30% more active than Argireline in its own testing, and reports that wrinkle severity around the eyes dropped by up to 63% in clinical tests. The product sheet we could open does not say how many volunteers took part or for how long.

Independent work only covers mixtures. A 2020 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology tested hyaluronic acid microneedle patches carrying acetyl octapeptide-3 plus four other actives over 12 weeks. A 2024 Korean trial in Annals of Dermatology put a patch with acetyl octapeptide-3 and two other actives under one eye and a placebo patch under the other in 24 people. Both reported fewer visible fine lines and no skin reactions.

Where the evidence stops

The big numbers come from the seller, without the details needed to judge them. The independent studies used blends, so Snap-8's own share of any effect can't be pulled out. We found no placebo-controlled trial of Snap-8 alone, and nothing on it beyond use on the skin surface.

Handling and storage

It arrives as a freeze-dried powder. Once bacteriostatic water goes in, it belongs in the fridge. Our reconstitution and storage guide covers the details, and the calculator does the maths.

A longer Argireline for the skin, with the maker's numbers out in front and the independent data still catching up.
