What is Semax?

Semax is a synthetic peptide analogue of the ACTH(4-7) fragment. It has been studied extensively in Russia for neuroprotection, with published research on BDNF upregulation, stroke recovery and cognitive enhancement.

What purity is guaranteed?

Where we hold an independent Janoshik report for a compound we publish it in full - batch number, purity and a verification key you can check against the lab yourself. Where we do not hold one the product is marked research grade and we say so, rather than claim a report we cannot produce.

Research guide

Semax, explained

The short version: Semax is a seven-amino-acid peptide built from a fragment of the hormone ACTH, capped with a stabilising Pro-Gly-Pro tail. It is a registered medicine in Russia, sold there as nasal drops, and nearly all of its research comes from Russian labs.

What it is

The front four amino acids, Met-Glu-His-Phe, come from ACTH (positions 4 to 7), a stretch that also appears in alpha-MSH. The back three, Pro-Gly-Pro, were added to make the molecule more resistant to breakdown. The Russian prescribing information describes it as an ACTH fragment analogue with no hormonal activity, absorbed through the lining of the nose and able to cross into the brain.

What has been studied

In Russia, Semax is registered as prescription nasal drops and classed as a nootropic. Its listed uses include memory and thinking problems linked to blood-vessel disease in the brain, and recovery after stroke.

Most of the lab work is in rats. A 2021 study in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences used a rat model of stroke (blood flow cut off and restored) and found shifts in brain proteins tied to inflammation and cell death that the authors read as protective. In people, a 2018 Russian study followed 110 stroke patients in rehabilitation. Those given Semax had higher blood levels of BDNF, a nerve growth factor, and better scores on a daily-living scale.

Where the evidence stops

Almost everything comes from Russian groups, much of it published in Russian. The 2018 stroke study split patients into Semax and no-Semax groups, but the abstract describes no placebo or blinding. The Russian registration is the only regulatory approval we could verify. We could not find a large blinded trial run outside Russia.

Handling and storage

It arrives as a freeze-dried powder. Once bacteriostatic water goes in, it belongs in the fridge. Our reconstitution and storage guide covers the details, and the calculator does the maths.

A real medicine in Russia with a stroke-recovery focus. Outside that system, the evidence has not been tested.
