What is Selank?
Selank is a synthetic analogue of the endogenous immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin. It exhibits anxiolytic effects via multiple neurotransmitter pathways without the sedation or dependence associated with benzodiazepines.

Selank, explained
The short version: Selank is a seven-amino-acid peptide made by lengthening tuftsin, a small fragment of an antibody protein, with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail. Russia registers it as an anti-anxiety nasal drop, but outside Russia it has barely been studied.
What it is
Tuftsin is four amino acids, Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg, cut from the heavy chain of human immunoglobulin G. Selank adds Pro-Gly-Pro to the end to slow its breakdown in the body. It was designed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with the Zakusov Research Institute of Pharmacology. Unlike Semax, which comes from the hormone ACTH and is aimed at brain recovery, Selank's whole story is about anxiety.
What has been studied
Russia registers Selank as nasal drops in the anxiolytic class. The main published clinical study is a 2008 Russian trial in 62 patients with generalised anxiety disorder or neurasthenia, comparing Selank with medazepam, a benzodiazepine. The anti-anxiety effect of the two was similar, and Selank also showed anti-fatigue and mildly stimulating effects. Patients also started with a shortened half-life of leu-enkephalin in their blood, and that measure rose during Selank treatment, mostly in the anxiety group.
On mechanism, a 2016 rat study in Frontiers in Pharmacology found Selank changed the activity of many genes involved in nerve signalling, with early changes that tracked those caused by GABA, the brain's main inhibitory messenger.
Where the evidence stops
The clinical trial compared Selank with another drug rather than placebo, in one country. The claim that it avoids the memory loss, withdrawal and dependence seen with benzodiazepines rests on Russian studies from the 1990s. We found no trials run outside Russia.
