What it is

Unlike most of what we stock, CBL-514 is a small molecule rather than a peptide. Its developer, Caliway Biopharmaceuticals, studies it as an injection into a targeted patch of subcutaneous fat, the layer that sits just under the skin.

What has been studied

ClinicalTrials.gov lists 16 Caliway studies. A phase 1 safety study started in 2018. A run of phase 2 trials followed on reducing subcutaneous fat, including a phase 2b, plus smaller ones on cellulite and on Dercum’s disease, a rare condition with painful fatty growths. Phase 3 trials on fat reduction started registering in 2026.

Where the evidence stops

Every registered trial is sponsored by the developer. The phase 3 trials, the ones big enough to settle how well it works and how safe it is, are still recruiting or have not started. No regulator has approved it for any use.
