What is Bronchogen?

Bronchogen is a short synthetic peptide from the Russian "peptide bioregulator" family associated with Khavinson. Compounds in this series were first described as peptide fractions isolated from animal organ tissue and later produced synthetically; this one is named for bronchial tissue. It is supplied for laboratory research only.

How strong is the published evidence?

Thin, and worth reading yourself before you plan anything. Most of the literature comes from a small number of Russian groups, is published in Russian, and sits in cell-culture and animal work rather than human trials. Independent replication outside that tradition is limited.

Research guide

Bronchogen, explained

The short version: Bronchogen is a four-amino-acid peptide from the Russian bioregulator tradition, aimed at the lungs and airways. The evidence is a handful of rat and test-tube studies, nearly all from Russian groups.

What it is

Bronchogen belongs to the family of short bioregulator peptides associated with Vladimir Khavinson, who co-authored much of the early work. It is a tetrapeptide made of alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and leucine, and papers usually write it as AEDL. It is the member of the family aimed at the airways.

What has been studied

The most relevant work is in rats. A St Petersburg group (Kuzubova, Titova and colleagues) built a COPD-like condition by exposing rats to nitrogen dioxide on and off for 60 days, then gave bronchogen for a month. In papers from 2015 and 2017 they reported less goblet cell overgrowth, squamous metaplasia and emphysema, a return of the ciliated cells that sweep mucus out, more secretory IgA and surfactant protein B, and fewer signs of neutrophil-driven inflammation in fluid washed from the lungs.

The other papers are mechanistic. A 2011 test-tube study co-authored by Khavinson found that bronchogen binds both strands of DNA and nudges up its melting temperature. Later work used it in cell cultures and even tobacco plant roots to look at gene activity.

Where the evidence stops

We could not find a controlled human trial of bronchogen. The animal results come from a small circle of Russian labs, published mainly in Russian journals, and we found no independent group repeating them. A rat lung damaged by nitrogen dioxide is also a long way from human COPD.

Handling and storage

It arrives as a freeze-dried powder. Once bacteriostatic water goes in, it belongs in the fridge. Our reconstitution and storage guide covers the details, and the calculator does the maths.

An airway bioregulator with tidy rat results and no human trials behind it.
